HYPNOSIS

WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?

Hypnosis briefly defined:

The term Hypnosis (from the Greek “hypnos”, meaning sleep) was coined in 1840 by Dr. James Braid, a Scottish Physician. The hypnotic state is entirely dissimilar to sleep. Rather it is a wakeful state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility, with diminished peripheral awareness..

Hypnosis is a scientifically verified and effective technique that can promote accelerated human change. With Hypnosis, we can create desired changes in behaviour and encourage mental and physical well-being. Healing by trance state (or an altered state of awareness) is among the oldest phenomena known to man and is found, in one form or another, in virtually every culture throughout the world.

Hypnosis is a state of mind, enhanced by mental and physical relaxation, in which we can communicate with our subconscious mind. It is an excellent method to tap into our inner potential. The altered state or trance allows a trained professional to access the subconscious where negative beliefs or behaviors unwanted by the client are ‘reframed’ into positive ones. This process is called “Hypnotherapy”.

It may surprise many to learn that we experience states of trance often during the course of our day. Even passing into ordinary sleep involves a kind of trance state. The experience of hypnosis is similar: neither asleep nor awake and a little like day dreaming, with a pleasant feeling of deep relaxation behind it all. Hypnosis is a state of trance that you can naturally enter in order to receive the beneficial “reframing” from a negative belief to a positive one.

In this way hypnosis is an effective way of making contact with our inner (subconscious) self, which is both a reservoir of unrecognized potential and knowledge as well as being the unwitting source of many of our problems.

Who can be Hypnotised?

Virtually everyone can be hypnotized. However, some are more readily hypnotizable then others. A lot depends on the willingness of the subject i.e. their particular need, desire for success; trust and confidence in the therapist. The level of the trance required is up for debate, but what we do know is that even where a person feels that they have not been hypnotized, given time (and this is a very important factor), the desired outcome of therapy might yet materialize.

This matter of time is especially important in our current society, which has, in many respects, been coerced into believing that gratification of every desire should be instantaneous. Hypnotherapy is a very effective tool, and if the right ingredients are present, such as the willingness of the subject; the goals can be achievable.

Common myths regarding hypnosis:

People are sometimes concerned that they will lose control in hypnosis. This myth is not substantiated; in fact, they actually remain in full control of the situation, regardless how deeply they enter into hypnosis. The ability to talk if you wish (or not as the case may be) stand up and leave the room at any time is possible.

The hypnotized person can not be made to do anything they wouldn’t do naturally, or in other words, they can’t be made to do anything against their usual ethical or moral judgment or religious belief. Hypnotherapy is clearly different then stage hypnosis which is used for entertainment only; in either case, permission must be granted by the person

HYPNOTHERAPY EXPLAINED

Hypnotherapy is the treatment of emotional and psychological disorders, unwanted habits and undesirable feelings, using altered state techniques. The aim of the treatment is to promote beneficial change in personal development and unlocking the inner potential by accessing the subconscious, where changes can be made on this deeper level.

The basis of hypnotherapy is grounded in the human brain/mind system. The mind is composed of two halves, the right side and the left side. The right side is the domain of imagery and dreams, long-term memory and rhythmic control while the left side is the domain of reason, logic and the critical faculties.

The subconscious holds all learned experience and accepts all information uncritically which is why our sleeping dreams seem so real, even when they are plainly absurd. When we are awake our conscious side is alert and censoring all information that appears to consciousness before accepting it into the subconscious mind.

Many problems are due to experiences during formative years (before the critical faculties are fully formed) or by extended repetition, as with the formation of a habit. Our aim in using hypnosis is to revise the information held in the mind that controls feelings, habits and behaviors.
